Denim Darling
Aha! We knew that denim would make a comeback in some way, shape, or form. And it did—but not in the way that you might think. This season, designers took the trusty fabric and created everything from dresses to handbags out of it. The best part? The pieces still managed to look chic and polished, even though they were made out of denim. Talk about a wardrobe staple that can do it all!
90s Nostalgia
Nothing says nostalgia quite like the return of the ’90s. This season, we saw everything from grunge-inspired plaids to denim overalls making a comeback on the runways. And we have to say; we’re pretty excited about it! After all, what’s not to love about a style that is both comfortable and fashionable?
Major in Monochrome
Move over, color blocking! This season, it’s all about dressing head-to-toe in a single hue. From vibrant oranges to electric blues, there was no shortage of monochromatic looks on the runways this season. And we have to say; we’re pretty obsessed with the trend. Not only does it make getting dressed in the morning a breeze, but it also has a way of making you look pulled together and polished—even if you’re just running to the grocery store.
Sherlock Chic
Never underestimate the power of a good trench coat. This season, designers took a page straight out of Sherlock Holmes’ playbook and sent models down the runway in everything from structured plaid dad coats to beige buttoned trenches. The best part? The trend is totally wearable, whether you’re running errands or attending a black-tie event.
Diamonds Are Forever
Almost as iconic as the little black dress, diamonds have been having a moment in the fashion world as of late. This season, we saw everything from crystal-embellished gowns to delicate diamond necklaces gracing the runways. And we have to say; we’re pretty obsessed with the trend. After all, what’s not to love about a little bit of extra sparkle? Perhaps the only downside to this trend is that it might just break the bank. But hey, a girl can dream, right?
Tassel Details
Short Fringes, long fringes, no fringes at all. Tassel detailing was everywhere this season, making it one of the most prominent trends of the season. And we have to say; we’re pretty excited about it! After all, what’s not to love about a trend that is both fun and fashionable? With so many different ways to wear it, we have a feeling this trend is here to stay.
Lace and Laser Cutting
Most people think of lace as being delicate and dainty. But this season, designers took the fabric and gave it a major makeover. From laser-cut detailing to edgy new silhouettes, there was no shortage of interesting takes on the trend. And we have to say; we’re pretty obsessed with it! After all, laser cutting, pas coupes droites and coupes qui suivent le pattern, what’s not to love about a trend that is both unique and fashion-forward?
Frothy and Feathery
Ruffles and Feathers are two trends that we never thought would go together, but somehow they do! This season, designers took the two trends and created some seriously stunning looks. From frothy tulle dresses to statement feather hemlines, there was no shortage of drama on the runways this season. We’re pretty obsessed with it, and rightly so! After all, what’s not to love about a trend that is both fun and fashionable?
Sports Luxe
Oh, how times have changed. The ’90s were all about dressing down and being comfortable. But this season, designers took the trend and gave it a major makeover. From silky tracksuits to embellished sneakers, there was no shortage of luxury on the runways this season. Fendi even sent models down the runway in crystal-embellished tracksuits, proving that comfort can be chic. We’re pretty obsessed with the trend, and we have a feeling you will be too!
Bubble Hems
When it comes to fashion trends, the voluminous bubble hem is one that always seems to make a comeback. And this season was no exception. From pretty floral dresses to edgy leather skirts, designers took the trend and ran with it. In a sea of frilly frocks, the bubble hem was a welcome change of pace. You can wear it casually or dress it up, making it the perfect addition to any wardrobe. Trust us; this trend is one that you’re going to want to get on board with!
Ruffles
You all know how much we love a good ruffle. So, it should come as no surprise that the trend was one of the most prominent ones this season. Designers took the feminine detail and ran with it, creating everything from delicate dresses to statement-making skirts. From big and bold to small and dainty, there was no shortage of ruffles on the runways this season.
Florals
“Florals for spring? Revolutionary.” Florals are returning and bigger than ever in the spring/summer fashion trends of 2023, according to one of the most iconic fashion quotations of all time. Large-scale blossom prints were shown heavily on the runways of Richard Quinn, Paul & Joe, and Rixo during London Fashion Week. While everyone put their own touch on the look, the emphasis was on bright and vibrant colors for maximum effect. 3d flowers, real-life flowers, and even small floral patterns are making a comeback.
Underwear as Outerwear
Naturally, when we think of underwear, we generally think of it as something to be worn under our clothes and not necessarily as a fashion statement in its own right. However, this season designers are changing the game with their takes on the trend. From delicate lingerie-inspired dresses to lacy corsets, there was no shortage of sex appeal on the runways this season.
Bow Details
Spring/summer 2023 bows should be bigger. Susan Fang, Richard Quinn, BMUET (TE), Erdem, and Klamby lead London Fashion Week with enormous, bold items. Bows, like flowers, are a summer staple for special occasion wear owing to their femininity and romance. Silks, tulles, and cotton translated scaled-up neck-bows, delicate ornamentation styles, and abstract forms that became shoulder strap embellishments for a dramatic but lovely finish.
Full Transparency
No longer just for the beach, see-through dresses and skirts are making their way into the mainstream fashion world. This season, designers from Jacquemus to Christopher Kane sent models down the runway in sheer and transparent looks. While the trend is definitely a daring one, it’s also one that can be surprisingly easy to wear. Just add a slip underneath, and you’re good to go!
Maxi Skirts
Along with the return of mini skirts, maxi skirts are also having a moment. This season, designers from Chloé, Brandon Maxwell to Givenchy sent models down the runway in floor-length skirts. And while the trend is definitely a dressy one, it can also be dressed down for a more casual look. Just add a pair of sneakers and a denim jacket, and you’re good to go!
Precious Cargo
Silky pink cargo pants with pockets on pockets? Yes, please. This season, utility-inspired pieces are making a comeback, and we are here for it. From camo prints to cargo pants, this trend is all about functionality and comfort. So if you’re looking for trends that you can actually wear in your everyday life, this is the one for you.
So sweet
The spring 2.0 version of last season’s pretty-things trend provided us with a new selection of exquisite, swoon-worthy outfits to think about all winter. Most noticeable on the runways were 3D rosettes, which appeared in various forms and sizes in practically every collection of the season, from Prada to Dries Van Noten to Blumarine. Sweet elements like tiny bows at Chanel and lace at Tory Burch and Burberry were equally tempting, as were soft pastel pink, purple, and green.
Heavy Metals
Metallics are often reserved for the winter months when holiday parties need festive clothes such as sequin minis and lamé slips. During this time of year, we do not wear metallics. This year, however, a surprisingly fresh range of shimmering gold and silver pieces has transformed the metallic trend into a year-round favorite that should no longer be denied a life outside of party season.
Skinny pants 2.0
Everything oversize has been the defining silhouette for the previous several seasons, but now that slim pants are making a comeback, we are witnessing a dramatic movement toward a more traditional design. The pant silhouette will be making a significant comeback in 2019, as seen by its appearance on the runway at Prada as well as in Maximilian Davis’s outstanding first collection for Ferragamo. At this point in time, we are not witnessing thin jeans making a significant comeback quite yet, which is why slender trousers are all the rage—at least for the time being.
Not a match
When it comes to Accessories, there is no such thing as too much. This season, designers are all about mixing and matching different colors, textures, and materials. And while the trend is definitely a bold one, it’s also one that can be surprisingly easy to wear. Designers like Beckham, Burch, and Tibi’s Amy Smilovic have shown us how to mix and match different colors, textures, and materials to create a look that is both contemporary and stylish.
Totally Tubular
In the last few years, the tube top has become a summer wardrobe staple. This year, however, the tube top is getting an upgrade. Designers are now offering a wide range of different takes on the classic silhouette, from cropped to longline to even one-shoulder. Christopher Esber, Khaite, and The Row are just a few of the brands that have embraced the new tube top trend. So if you’re looking for a way to update your summer wardrobe, consider investing in a few of these stylish new takes on the classic tube top.
Gauzy knits
Gauzy knits are showing this for the next season. Some notable ensembles included tissue-like, see-through knits. We saw transparent shirts and skirts with bras and briefs underneath at Miu Miu, Prada, and Tory Burch—looks that will certainly be popular for magazine editorials. Though editorial, these transparent dresses are wearable.
Come Undone
Undone clothing ruled spring/summer runways. Designers are dressed casually, from menswear-inspired shirting to slip skirts. Prada’s suiting was purposefully wrinkled; Interior’s knits had unraveling sleeves, and dip-dyed skirts looked muddy; Miu Miu’s skirt suits had raw hems, and Jil Sander’s pastel dresses had undone edges. These imprecise elements evoke autumn 2022’s emo grunge trend.
The Inbetweeners
For spring, knee-length fashions will be all the rage after 2022’s tiny miniskirts and floor-sweeping maxis. Maybe designers realize we need clothes to wear back to the workplace and are providing that, but the designs are cooler than you might anticipate for the corporate dress code. The selection includes Miu Miu’s low-slung skirts with exposed boxers and utilitarian bralettes, Prada’s leather pencil skirts with matching shrunken jackets, and Peter Do’s layered skirts.
Pants optional
It’s hard to describe this season’s pants-less runway looks. The Bottega Veneta ensemble with a model in tights, a navy-blue cardigan, kitten heels, and a silk scarf tucked into the hosiery has been shared most on Who What Wear’s group conversations. One model walked the Victoria Beckham runway with a bra, tights, and a fitted jacket, continuing the trend. A few Coperni ensembles included legs and fantastic shoes.
Layer by layer
Spring 2023 is all about layering cool essentials like the Prada logo tank top that became a cult favorite in autumn 2022. Tory Burch styled tube skirts, leggings, and gauzy knits in more creative ways. Layers of jersey shirts and skirts in neutral grey, white, and beige were worn at Miu Miu to elevate the essentials. Key takeaway? Layered clothes don’t appear natural.
Baggy jeans
This season cements the baggy jeans trend. Bottega Veneta, Tibi, and others say you can ditch those skinnies for a time. Ingeniously, some of the baggier denim styles can be worn with heels. The proportions are key to making this work—just make sure your top isn’t too long or oversized.
Supersized Blazers
We adore power blazers. Blazers improved this spring. Luar and Coach illustrated how the supersized basic could elevate suiting. To be sure, this season’s take is a bit longer than last year’s iteration. Blazers also got an unexpected makeover with vivid colors and patterns at Christopher John Rogers and Bottega Veneta. Whether you choose a strong, shoulder-padded style or an oversize one, just make sure it’s big.
Drop-Waist Dresses and Skirts
Attention: The 1980s are coming back big time. Carolina Herrera and Sandy Liang have shown that drop-waist skirts are coming back in 2023—and they look terrific. This one excites us. Not only does the silhouette have a certain innocence to it, but when you consider how many of us are spending more time at home, comfort is key. We’ll take a flowy drop-waist dress or skirt any day.
Sleek, Simple, and Crisp Tailoring
Solid suits are usually an excellent idea. For spring 2023, Jil Sander, Peter Do, and Elena Velez illustrate that traditional suiting can be chic with clean lines and gorgeous fabrics. Most designers proposed a suit in some form or another. And why not? Wearing a suit always makes you feel more powerful.
Heavy-Duty Leather
A leather jacket is the best transitional piece. Spring runways suggest wearing moto-inspired clothing other than outerwear. Leather weather is better, according to spring 2023 runways. Because let’s be honest—a leather coat is an excellent investment. And it looks just as good with jeans and a T-shirt as it does with a dress. We’re seeing heavy-duty leather on the runways of Miu Miu, Bottega Veneta, and JW Anderson.
Romantic Balletcore
Designers embraced dancing by contrasting leather’s toughness with ballet’s softness. From Interior’s actual ballerina flats to Blumarine’s flowing tendrils and drapery, fashion can’t get enough of this trend. In spring 2023, we see a lot of ballet core looks on the runway. Romantic and ethereal, this is a trend that can take many different forms. We’ve seen it done with floaty skirts and dresses, as well as more structured pieces like tutus. Women’s Armor
Breastplates at Gabriela Hearst, Bevza, and LaQuan Smith are usually a delightful surprise. Combined with big coats and arm cuffs (a spring 2023 jewelry trend), spring 2023 is about powerful ladies. We agree. Metallic crop tops or corsets are perfect for this season and next. Even if you don’t go full-on armor, consider adding a breastplate to your wardrobe. It’ll make you feel invincible.
The Rise of the Derrière
Unexpected trend? Butts—literally. LaQuan Smith, Puppets and Puppets, and Collina Strada all featured back-focused looks. We hate to see it go, but we enjoy seeing it go. You can wear this trend in many ways, whether it’s a full-on butt-bearing dress or a pair of high-waisted pants that show off your backside. If you’re feeling daring, try a thong bodysuit à la LaQuan Smith. Otherwise, go for a more subtle approach with a pair of cheeky panties.
Not-Your-Average Button-Down
Designers updated button-down dresses for Spring 2023. Ruching, cutouts, and statement bell sleeves make this trend more interesting than your average shirtdress. We’re seeing this trend done in many different ways, from minimalist to maximalist. Whether you also want a demure look or something more daring, there’s a button-down dress for you.
Front Cutouts
Next spring, front cuts will highlight your sternum and belly button. There are several ways to wear the style, whether you want something sensual, structured, or more covered. You can find front cutouts on dresses, tops, and even pants. This trend was seen on the runways of Bevza, Area, Brandon Maxwell, and Collina Strada.
